Eulogy For Sam Muller

Sam Muller was born on December 25, 1928, in Tianjin, China, to Jewish parents of Russian descent. His father Shaul was an accountant who moved from Warsaw to China when Poland was still part of the Russian Empire. The family of his mother, Anya, fled Russia during the 1917 revolution, initially settling in Harbin. Around 1926, Sam's parents joined the Jewish community in Tianjin, which at its peak numbered 2,000-2,500 people.

Russian was the main language in the community, but the younger generation also spoke English, and Sam learned Chinese as well. Sam experienced several significant historical events during his childhood, including the great flood of 1939, when the Chinese Nationalist Army blew up the Yellow River dams and flooded the city. He lived through the Japanese occupation that began in 1941 and the liberation by the American Marines in September 1945. He completed his high school studies at the age of 15 during the war.

Sam joined Betar (Brit Yosef Trumpeldor), the only Jewish youth organization in the city, around 1937. Betar's activities focused on Jewish education, sports, and Zionism. After the end of World War II and when news of the Holocaust arrived, Betar became more active in its Zionist aspirations. Sam and his friends began anti-British actions, and in early 1947, they decided to travel to Israel (Palestine) to join the underground Irgun (National Military Organization). In June 1947, Sam and his friend Harry Marinsky were the first Jewish youths from China to make Aliyah (immigration to Israel) after World War II. In April 1947, they obtained Polish passports and set out to join their brothers in Israel.

They left by ship in July 1947, arrived in Naples in August 1947, and joined the Irgun (they were received and sworn in by Eliyahu Lankin, the Irgun leader in Europe, who was also from China). For about half a year (August 1947 - February 1948), they underwent various military training in Europe (including shooting, bomb-making, etc.) and assisted Irgun activities in Italy, France, Germany, and Czechoslovakia.

They arrived in Haifa on February 14, 1948, and were sent to a training camp in Shuni near Binyamina for a grueling 17-day officers' course in the Irgun. The training included weapons, hand-to-hand combat, and field tactics. Their mission was clear: they were sent back to China to establish an Irgun cell that would recruit and train Zionist youth and be able to attack British interests in the Far East if Britain reneged on its promise to withdraw from Israel.

On March 10, 1948, they left for China via the air route: Lod - Sharjah (UAE) - Bombay - Calcutta - Bangkok - Hong Kong - Shanghai. But they only arrived on March 27, 1948, due to a two-week quarantine in an Indian hospital because of prior contact with infected disease. During the quarantine, a generous local maharaja arranged high-quality meals for the group. After their release, they stayed at the prestigious Taj Mahal Hotel in Bombay, where the maharaja also lent them money for daily expenses, which they later repaid from Shanghai.

After returning to Shanghai in March 1948, Sam and Harry focused on establishing and implementing the Irgun's agenda in China. Their mission had three main objectives: to train and recruit young Jewish fighters in China, to sabotage British military and logistical assets in Asia, and to organize the transfer of trained combat personnel to the State of Israel.

The initial focus was on intensive military training for Jewish youth, especially Betar members in Shanghai and those who came from Tianjin. The training included military tactics, weapons handling, and underground methods. Operations were carried out in secret locations, including apartments and rural areas. The key to success was Morris "Two-Gun" Cohen, a legendary Jewish partner of Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai-shek. With Cohen's help and his connections in the Chinese Nationalist government, the group obtained weapons, explosives, and training equipment.

Among other things, Sam and Harry, under Irgun guidance, planned to sabotage British ships and facilities in Asia by planting explosives disguised as cargo. However, this plan was canceled after the British evacuation from Israel on May 14, 1948. Another, bolder plan was to acquire a ship that would transport a battalion-sized Jewish fighting force (from China and the U.S.) to Israel via the Philippines and the Gulf of Eilat. Weapons were to be purchased from U.S. World War II stockpiles in the Philippines. This plan, supported by the Betar leadership including Motia Olmert (father of Ehud Olmert), collapsed after the Altalena affair and the tragic confrontation between the Irgun and Ben-Gurion.

On October 31, 1948, the first group - Sam, his classmate Joe Pitel, Sammy Poliak, and two Jewish brothers from Shanghai (of Iraqi origin) - left for Israel to join the IDF. They first arrived in France, and then in mid-November, they traveled to Marseille and joined other new immigrants and volunteers waiting for passage to Israel. They sailed on the ship Negev in early December. Upon their arrival on December 7, 1948, they were taken to an IDF recruitment center. When Sam declared China as his birthplace, the clerks thought it was a joke. When they understood the truth, they celebrated: "The Chinese are coming!" Sam registered under the Hebrew version of his name - Muller - and received personal number 148713. A few weeks later, on New Year's Eve 1948, the group was sent to the Negev and joined other international volunteers. In early 1949, they joined the Palmach's Negev Brigade and took part in Operation Uvda, which secured Eilat (then Umm Rashrash).

Meanwhile, Sam's Irgun associate, Jack Lieberman, led a large group of 900 Jewish immigrants from China to Israel aboard the Worcester Victory, which sailed around Africa due to the closure of the Suez Canal. Many of Sam's Chinese friends joined this wave of immigration.

After his discharge from the army in 1950, Sam worked as a mechanic and later as a chief mechanic in a company established by Jews from China. In 1951, he married his sweetheart Hannah. In 1956, he began his engineering studies at the Technion and graduated in 1960. Since then, he became an expert in establishing large factories around the world, especially seed oil extraction plants. He built more than 70 different factories worldwide, from the U.S. to China, from Colombia to Fiji Islands, in Africa and the Caribbean.

Sam built a beautiful and loving family with his wife Hannah, but the fall of his eldest son Shauli in the Yom Kippur War left a wound in his heart that never healed. Nevertheless, his daughter Ilana and youngest daughter Liat brought him much joy and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His daughter Ilana wrote this about her father:

"Sam Muller, a man of vision and action, immigrated from China and fought for the establishment of the state in its early years. In his modest but determined way, he became an international businessman, established factories across the globe, and never ceased to create and act — until almost his last day, including in China, where it all began. At the age of 96, his heart stopped beating, but his spirit still pulsates in every corner his hand touched."

03/04/25 China’s Digital Ecosystem

with No Comments

On April 3rd, we had the pleasure of hosting a wonderful lecture at the Chinese Cultural Center in Tel Aviv. The lecture, titled "The digital space in China and Chinese Gen-Z's – Not what you thought!", was delivered by Mr. Rom Amir — a consultant for technology companies and start-ups on penetrating the Chinese market — who offered thoughtful insights into China’s fast-changing digital world.

Participants learned about the complexities and uniqueness of China's digital ecosystem, discovering how platforms like WeChat, Alibaba, Douyin (TikTok), and Baidu have transformed consumer behaviors, shaped societal trends, and significantly influenced the culture of Chinese Gen-Z.

The discussion highlighted the remarkable differences between Chinese social media platforms and their Western counterparts, noting China's distinctive integration of social interaction, e-commerce, entertainment, and financial services within these applications, deeply embedded into everyday life.

Looking both at what's happening within China and its global influence, the event highlighted why it’s so important to understand these trends — especially with younger Chinese users playing an increasingly central role in shaping global digital culture.

with No Comments
